Leadership Positions

  • Co-Chair ASIS&T (American Society for Information Science and Technology) UW Chapter (2006-2007)
  • Co-Founder iEdge (2006). iEdge grew out of our desire to keep current on emerging trends in the world of information. iEdge's mission is to provide a forum where students research and share information about cutting-edge developments in the areas of technology and information science. It is now a part of ASIS&T.

Past and future ASIS&T and iEdge events include:

    • "iEdge 2007: So What? Research Into Practice". This half-day conference in March will feature iSchool professors, students, alumni and local professionals speaking about how to translate research into practice. In addition to traditional panel discussions, there will also be practical workshops and a reception/poster session.
    • Information Architecture Practical. This event featured two iSchool alumni, Aaron Louie and Samantha Starmer, discussing their careers in Information Architecture. Samantha and Aaron gave practical, concrete details about their jobs, walked through a typical client-IA design conversation and answered questions. Attended by over 50 people, this event was an enormous success.
    • "Findability: A Cyberspace Safari with Peter Morville & Joe Janes". This event featured internationally-known information architecture guru Peter Morville and iSchool professor Joe Janes discussing the future of search. I raised $5000 from 13 sponsors in order to produce this event, which was attended by over 175 people, having sold out the Kane Hall auditorium. While here, Peter also gave a lecture to students entitled "What is Information Architecture," introducing more than two dozen students to the field of IA.
    • Amazon's personalization manager discussing Amazon's personalization features from an information perspective
    • A web services expert explaining how web services work
    • A data security consultant discussing how IA can be enhanced by data security
    • Student presentations on blogging by school librarians, RSS feeds and my own presentation on my work on BioMediator
